To buy or not to buy...that is the question

My husband wants an Xbox 360 for Christmas. Here's my dilemma...we don't have cash to pay for it. We would have to put it on credit. He doesn't ask for much and this is all he wants. He always buys me tons of stuff for birthdays and Christmas. His love language is gift giving. I could care less for gifts or giving them. I'm a bit of a tightwad, Scrooge, whatever you want to call it. Mostly because I actually get very excited at the thought of paying off bills. I don't know why. There is just an immense thrill for me in not having a debt. I realize I have a problem. I'm not saying it's good. I actually wanted to get movies and books out of the garage and wrap them up for Christmas. (An original idea from Bobbi, I might add.) They're brand new to the kids. And, they're only two. What do they know. We have to take advantage of their guilibility while we can.
Anyway, I can't decide. I know he would like it, but it makes me cringe at the thought of getting into debt over Christmas. By the way, I don't have to worry about him reading this. He never reads our family blog.

because I've been reading more financial books and trying to do better, I would veto the credit card. Pat Hendrix told me once that there are two kinds of people 1) those who understand interest and 2) those who don't understand interest. When you get it you get it, but I understand where you are coming from with Brant. I think if you could take all credit away from him and get him to promise not to spend anything on Christmas (the garage idea is a good one. I fully support that) beg him not to get you anything. Tell him you have a Christmas surprise already for him, but only if he doesn't spend any Christmas money otherwise it will ruin the surprise. If you could get a way with just the Xbox I would say go for it because I know Brants gift giving/receiving personality. I hope that made sense.

I don't know if you even know who I am, but I am Dona's friend Heather. I am with Vicki on not being in debt. I would give him an "IOU" for the Xbox stating that you will put whatever amount of dollars away per paycheck and NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS that money only goes towards his Xbox. I'm out of debt except for my car and I love it. Also get him something that you can afford for Christmas morning. Just my two cents worth.

Yeah, I'd say forget the Xbox 360. You should get him a PS3. Blu-ray + games. Ha ha! I love mine. But then you would have to get a HDTV if you don't already have one. There are my two cents. Do what's best for the family.
